The fastest insect is the Australian tiger beetle (Cicindela hudsoni) which can run at speeds of up to 5.6 miles (9 kilometers) per hour. This may not sound like much, but relative to its body size, it's incredibly fast. Other fast insects include the Saharan silver ant (Cataglyphis bombycina), which can run at speeds of up to 0.6 meters per second, and the common fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster), which can fly at speeds of up to 4.5 meters per second.
